How we rank
Five scores, one grade, and a plain explanation of what each one means.
Every product on a comparison page receives five scores out of ten. The overall grade is their average, shown as a number and as a letter.
The five scores
Sleep comfort
How the product feels in use according to its materials, construction and what buyers report: softness, heat, smell, noise. Weighted equally with the others.
Neck support
Whether the shape and the density of the material hold the head and neck in line with the spine, and whether they keep doing so over time. Based on published specifications and buyer feedback on sagging and flattening.
Fit for sleeping positions
How many sleeping positions the product suits, and how well. A pillow that works for back and side sleepers scores higher than one built for a single position.
Return policy
The length of any trial period, whether a refund is offered after use, and how clear the terms are. A 60-night trial with refund scores near the top; no trial on hygiene grounds scores near the bottom.
Customer satisfaction
A reading of public customer reviews across retailers and the brand's own site, weighted towards recent reviews and towards reviews that describe weeks of use rather than unboxing.
Letter grades
9.5 and above is A+. 9.0 to 9.4 is A. 8.5 to 8.9 is B+. 8.0 to 8.4 is B. 7.5 to 7.9 is C+. 7.0 to 7.4 is C. Below 7.0 we do not usually include the product.
What we do not do
- We do not run a laboratory or sleep-test products for weeks. We compare what is published and what buyers report.
- We do not accept payment to change a score or a position in a ranking. Compensation can influence which products we cover.
- We do not make medical claims. A pillow changes position and comfort; it does not treat a condition.
- We do not invent user counts, ratings or awards. Scores on this site are ours and are explained here.
